New Orleans Pelicans Horns Play For Brandon Ingram
A breakdown of a special run for Brandon Ingram that the Suns run for Devin Booker.
The New Orleans Pelicans are scoring 1.67 Points Per Possession when they run this play for Brandon Ingram. No, that is not a typo - a small sample of 15 possessions but the Pelicans are scoring at a ridiculous rate when they run this action.
Starting this week I will be diving deeper into team and player-specific breakdowns that will be more in-depth for paid subscribers, as well as the final 5 posts of the 5-Out Offense study. Right now there is 1 day left for the early season sale of 20% off - check out the link below for that!

New Orleans Pelicans Horns Out
Looking for their first win of the season the Pelicans were up 10 with just over 3 minutes in the 4th quarter and ran their best set from this early season. The play is simple but difficult to defend since they empty out one side of the floor and screen for Ingram to get open in space.
The reason I call this Horns Out is that normally the play starts off with 2 players in the corners and players at the elbows like Horns, but since one side of the floor is emptied typically that corner just goes ahead and clears that space. Starting off the initial screen for Ingram is set around the elbow but just at the free-throw line to cut off of to the empty side of the floor.
Emptying out the side of the floor allows Ingram freedom to attack with little or no help. He can attack the rim right off the catch, catch and shoot or look to use the other options after the catch.
In this clip, Ingram hits the defense with a perfect short, violent jab to set up space and finish the possession and the game with a great pullup.
Fade Option
The reason for the screening angle and location is to allow Ingram the freedom for reads and options. If the defender cheats and tries to go under to beat him to the spot he can “Fade” it out to the 3 point line.
This also means that the 2 players who were spacing will need to clear out to the other side and the Pelicans will run the action on the other side then.
If the fade read doesn’t result in a shot opportunity then it flows into the next action.
Chase Option
If Ingram cannot attack right off the initial screen, then the big who sets that screen will follow into a side ballscreen action or 2-man reads.
When the defense knows this play is coming they will do a good job denying Ingram the ball, which the Pelicans will counter with by passing the ball to the elbow and then react off that.

Phoenix Suns Horns Out
This was another set that Willie Green took with him from his time with the Phoenix Suns and the Suns ran this set for Devin Booker & now CP3.
A counter that I anticipate the Pelicans adding throughout this season to free up Ingram more when teams start scouting and prepping for this play is the “Twirl” action below.
