In this breakdown we will do a deep dive into how we run, design and install our 5-Out Break. We made a big change from this past season to focus on playing as fast as possible and that change was huge for our offense.
In my first 2 seasons as head coach we didn’t score 80 once, and we ended up scoring 80 or more 10 times in the last season alone. The pace change really paid off because we improved from 17% of our possessions in transition to 39% of our possessions - finishing the season #1 on Synergy.
Not only did our % of transition possessions increase, but so did our PPP, going from 0.98 to 1.00 PPP.
The biggest takeaways from playing fast after learning throughout this season:
Freedom
Let them play Fast, Fun & Free. You don’t teach during the test.
Long Term Process
Mistakes are going to happen - especially early in the season so stick with the process and keep the long-term vision.
Reps Over Details
This was the hardest one for me. I love details, but worrying about every little mistake in practice takes away from reps. And reps in transition mean being in the best shape and living in the chaos more frequently than other teams.
Play
Give up control and let the players play and make plays - especially early in the season. I hated this part to be honest. But letting them learn through playing at a high pace in practice leads to better decisions over the course of the season and you get in shape very quickly.
