Full breakdown on Luka’s incredible series vs the Timberwolves + ATO’s & sets used:
Give The Ball To Luka
Honestly…it’s kind of that simple for the Mavericks. Luka is so special he just needs to have the ball passed to him, get a rebound and good offense will follow. Attacking defense early tends to lead to better results, especially cuts and lobs to the rim.
Luka also attacks deep into the lane often, draws help and then finds shooters for corner 3’s.
When he gets an ISO opportunity, he loves to step back to his left for 3’s, but he does shoot 40% from 3 going right or left and takes a 3 half of the time.
Then when he gets into the spots he wants to in and around the paint, he is one of (if not the best) the best player in the NBA at pump faking, step throughs and finishes through contact.
Double Ballscreen
The primary way the Mavericks attacked in the previous series was using double ballscreens, where they can force Luka’s defender through 2 screens and normally the first ballscreener will be the player they are actually trying to involve in the action. Since most teams want to keep the matchup on Luka, this means a tougher recovery.
