First Four Day 1 Sets Breakdown:
Zone Thru Flash - Texas Southern
The very first possession that Texas Southern saw zone defense from Fairleigh Dickinson they had this zone set ready to go. Initially they pass to the wing and then send the player cutting through - a key thing to focus here is to cut over the top in front of the defense.
As the player is cutting through the opposite wing flashes behind into the middle of the zone.
Texas Southern went to this action often enough that it got Fairleigh Dickinson out of the zone pretty quickly.
Strong Fan - Fairleigh Dickinson
Fairleigh Dickinson took advantage of their shooting big by disguising it out of stagger/strong action in a double screen.
When the player cuts and clears the first screener then turns and sets a flare screen for the second screener to get open for a 3.
Horns Twist Empty Pop - Fairleigh Dickinson
Another action in which Fairleigh Dickinson used a pick and pop designed set out of Horns. Starting off with a ballscreen first and then coming off a flare screen after.
The big then sets a ballscreen at the same time the corner player clears to the opposite side emptying out, then after the ballscreen is set the player pops to the 3 point line.
Shuffle - Nevada
Nevada ran the classic Shuffle set out of Chin with a little twist to it, starting off with a backscreen up top and then opening up into 5-Out.
On the reversal the opposite wing who cut in toward the elbow sets a backscreen and then comes off a downscreen ending in a post touch.
Slice Stagger Spain - Arizona State
Arizona State runs a lot of action out of Slice/Stagger and they ran two great ones in the game against Nevada. This set starts off with a pass to the wing and then a clear to the corner, then on the reversal the big low sets a slice screen in the middle of the floor.
Then the stagger action is set for the point guard in the corner to come off and receive the pass - normally going into a spread ballscreen. Arizona State here goes into spain action or a backscreen for the ballscreener.
Ending up in a spread pick and roll and although nothing came of this set, this action is still great and used by a lot of teams.
Here is an example of Spain running this action:
Slice Stagger Elevator - Arizona State
Another counter out of this action, starting off with the normal Slice action into the lane.
This then flows into stagger action with the first player curling into the lane and then the player who cut off the initial slice screen comes off the stagger screen.
Setting up the elevator action for the player in the lane to look for the shot.
Backdoor Cut Timing
Although not a set, this play was great by DJ Horne. When everything broke down Arizona State likes to flash to the elbows for cutting action and here the hesitation and faking like he is going to screen for the corner sets up the backdoor with great timing and execution.
