How NBA teams attack switching

NBA teams have always switched on defense to a degree, but over the past 10 seasons NBA defenses have gone to switching 1-5 more and more. It seems like switching everything all the time peaked with the D’Antoni Rockets who pushed one of the greatest teams all-time in the Warriors to the brink, but there have still been versions of switching that has had success against modern NBA offenses.

Defending Ghost Screens

In this deep dive we are going to look at how the Mavericks defended the Flat & Ghost screen variations from the Thunder in the 2024 NBA Playoffs. We look at how the Thunder run ghost screens, the different variations and then the most common ways Ghost screens are defended.

To combat teams switching more and more, NBA offense had to come up with actions and concepts to attack it - besides just isolating and looking for post ups. Since NBA teams have shifted almost completely to running 5-out systems, defenses had to switch and then the progression of switching vs attacking switching started. One of those concepts is using a ghost screen after finding the switch you want or if the teams switch their big men.
