Throughout the month of March and bleeding into April, I am going to be watching a variety of conference & NCAA Tournaments, games, and teams. I will be doing play breakdowns on the best actions from the games I am watching and studying starting with the OVC tournament. If you want to see any specific plays or actions that you would like covered you can reply to any of these, or reach out on Twitter!

Latest Breakdown on Quin Snyder & The Atlanta Hawks
Strong Keep Ghost - Tennessee Tech
When needing a bucket late Tenn Tech went to a nice set out of an initial stagger or double screen action.
The passer then ghosts slot to slot to try and create a downhill driving lane.
It ends in a middle drive so when the gap help comes, the player on the wing does a great job of finding space for the kickout 3.
Miami Slip - Tennessee Tech
One of my favorite sets from Purdue’s playbook, running a hand off into a ballscreen is very common action and setup.
Here the weakside action takes away any help and on the hand off into a pick and roll into a slip gets an easy layup.
Delay Chicago Clear ISO - Tennessee Tech
We looked at how the Grizzlies disguise sets for Ja Morant with initial decoy action, and a part of it was how they would setup common action to make it seem like a normal play was being run. Here Tech runs normal “Chicago” action out of Delay.
This is just a decoy setup and as the hand off occurs, the player on the wing 45 cuts to clear opposite and the ball is passed to the wing.
The player can ISO/attack off the catch and creates a good action before the isolation.
Buckeye Spain - Southern Indiana
One of my favorite plays & series that Thad Matta used to run all the time at Ohio State as their main ballscreen motion, this play has lots of action. Starting off with a pass to the wing and then a flare screen for the point guard, the ball is then reversed with a dribble.
On the reversal it goes into a handoff and then ballscreen, with the basic normal ballscreen action looking for roll & replace.
Here they go into Spain action, setting a backscreen for the ballscreen.
I first saw this action from Louisville under Chris Mack:
Horns Elbow Get - Southeast Missouri St
Elbow get is a very common set in the NBA started by Mike D’Antoni and used by teams like the Spurs, Heat & Warriors throughout the 2010’s. Here Southeast Missouri State ran it 6 times in the semifinal to take advantage of the elbow ballscreen.
As the ball is passed to the elbow, it is a ballscreen at a tight angle.
They also used “AI Rip” as an entry for this set:
Diamond Reject ISO - Southeast Missouri State
Teams run “Diamond” or Floppy action with a player around the nail as a common way to free up shooters.
After the cut off the screen and catch on the wing, the same player on the ballside block lifts like he is going to set a ballscreen and freeing up space for the baseline drive.
Up Get Ghost Cross - Morehead State
This set has lots of movement in it starting off with an upscreen for the big to the post and then lifting the screener to the top of the key.
Then the opposite screener Ghosts the screen up top as false action.
The ball is passed to the pop, and at the same time a baseline stagger is set with a fake pass to the player coming off it. Quickly reversing the ball and setting a cross screen low frees up the entry pass into good position for the post-up.
BOB Lob - Southeast Missouri State
A common lob set run throughout college basketball, the initial screen sets up the lob with the player cutting off to the corner.
As the player clears then the lob for the player circling to the rim is open.
